cementing his reputation as the star toaster with the small but popular el paso sound system, based in the waltham park area, dennis alcapone was one of the first deejays to rise to prominence following u roy’s breakthrough in the late 1960s. born dennis smith in the rural district of culloden, he became immersed in sound system culture after settling in western kingston. once el paso became big on the sound system circuit, dental technician-turned-producer keith hudson brought him into the studio for his debut recordings, which led to a debut album for studio one and hit material for duke reid, some cut in concert with his deejay sparring partner, lizzy. alcapones longstanding links with bunny lee yielded the excellent guns don’t argue album, first issued in 1972, on which the toaster raps with style over some of lees all-time greatest rhythms, including delroy wilsons better must come, john holts left with a broken heart and slim smiths rendition of the temptations soul classic ain’t too proud to beg.

makeness, the brainchild of kyle molleson, returns with his white label . off the back of a minor science remix being played out by the likes of jamie xx, ben ufo, avalon emerson and more last summer, the ep marks the producer’s most dance oriented ep yet. the roots of temple works date back to the producer’s time in leeds, which played an important part in both this release and his wider love for dance music. while there, molleson recorded a friend s percussion project, g-bop orchestra, at an old textile mill in holbeck, known as temple works. the vast openness of the space made for the best natural reverb and is weaved throughout the title track. it was also in leeds where the producer discovered cosmic slop, an all welcoming party with a sound system built by founder and resident dj, tom smith, with donations going towards raising money for local charity map (music and arts production). slop’s intimate and flawless sounding room played a huge part in cementing makeness’ love for club spaces.

still reeking from the filth of the tv studio, tabloid mongering and howls of blasphemy from the old guard, dj seinfeld is proving to be a hardened veteran of the circuit. a new anti-hero for a humourless and devoid internet age kicking against the hollywood reptiles. ‘ruff hysteria’ is the sounds from the cutting room floor deemed too unsavoury for public consumption. it’s the grind of acid in the hotel lobby and the incessant pulse of a walkman tucked into a tuxedo pocket oozing it’s way into the central nervous system. it’s four tracks abandoned by the mainstream studios picked up by the grotty b-movie generation. the losers, the freaks, gore heads. bare bones tackle for the floor and analogue anthems for the disenchanted.

on thanksgiving 1989, kmart employee and audio enthusiast mark davis wandered behind the customer service desk to check out the store’s sound system, which looped muzak and top 40 plus ads and announcements under the banner of “kmrt, the kmart radio network.” when he found last month’s tape hadn’t been thrown out yet, he pocketed it and made a habit of doing this, collecting 56 tapes from 1989-1992. in september 2015, davis uploaded the tapes to archive.org with the humble intention of preserving them. but within a few weeks he became an internet celebrity among obscure media fans and supplemented the collection with reel-to-reel tapes from the 70s and 80s thanks to tom schwarzrock, who acquired them serendipitously along with a deck he purchased. the tapes are like a consumerist time capsule, a vaporwave trove of eerily familiar corporate ephemera extracted from its original context and purpose. similarly, attention kmart choppers is composed of pieces from this collection chopped up, resculpted, and mosaicked together by juicy the emissary, forming a new, distinctly contemporary sound while inheriting a haunting nostalgia that provokes memories burrowed deep in the subconscious

o celebrate the 25th anniversary of ugkãs first album, get on down goes the extra mile, presenting it for the first time ever on vinyl. and 2-lp clear vinyl at that, giving the strutting, funky grooves the chance to really stretch out on your system. back in 1992, southern hip-hop was still proving to the world that it could sustain a fan base that was chiefly raised on rap from new york and la. the geto boys and 2 live crew had made strong cases by the earliest 90s, and pimp c and bun b were ready to make their own. most of the trunk-bumping bass comes from drum programs and basic sampling on these tunes in later years they would build their sound into something even fuller and deeper. self-produced with additional work from houston locals bernie bismark and shetoro henderson, the tracks here are minimal, slow and menacing, which matched their lyrical approach quite nicely. you can hear the beginnings of the groups true greatness in these early lyrical workouts ¹ several taken from the regional cassette-only ep the southern way that got them signed to jive with tales of street hustles, relationships and self-reliance in a world stacked against them. they may have been done early-on, but that doesnt mean they arent crucial to ugks legacy cases in point being the three singles: something good, a charismatic update to bill withers use me up, and pocket full of stones (the latter featured on the menace ii society soundtrack). beyond the singles, deeper cuts like iãm so bad, feels like iãm the one whos doin dope and cramping my style made it clear to the world that this crew had the attitude and charisma to make even bigger waves in the years to come.

finnish techno icon mono junk aka kim rapatti joins forces with berlin based freestyle man aka klas sasse lindblad, known for his productions on classic labels like sähkö and moodmusic. pata ep starts with the hard hitting techno title ‘not a love story’, haunting vocals, simple synthline, slicing percussion and deep bassdrum, all u need to make an effect, this must be heard in a big sound system. following with ‘need your lovin’ the ep takes a more electro approach, mesmerising love story with jupiter-8 bassline and 808 beats accompanied with vocals on this track too by mr rapatti. the ep ends with ‘stella polaris’, a production which started as a jam in 2007 in berlin at sasse’s blackhead studios and was finished 10 years later in 2017 in the same location. reminiscing of early 90s electronica time when everything was pure and gold and when these fellows also were starting their careers. ‘stella polaris’ leaves no one cold with emotional themes of analog synthesis and depth of the bass.

audiosapr is one of the most consistent albums you’re likely to come across in russia’s gost zvuk entire back catalogue. surprisingly, the full-length by saint petersburg’s scene veteran kuzma palkin is a compilation of random jams and studio recordings he made in the period of 2014-2015, carefully pieced together by label’s masterminds. sapr stands for the system of automatic projection (a russian term for computer-aided design, cad) which defines the album’s experimental yet complex and interlocking heart. based around a central theme of immediacy and spontaneity, audiosapr builds upon the foundations of early, pre-detroit era of electro and techno, and then progresses the wispy entrails of analogue gear in a contemporary dancefloor direction. it’s clearly music that can be attributed as hybrid, however it’s not you re going to think about while listening to “audiosapr”, palkin’s definitely most inspiring work to date.
